U-Pick Season is Officially Here!

July 10, 2019

It’s U-Pick season and we are EXCITED! We still consider ourselves newbies when it comes to u-picking, but don’t kid yourselves, we LOOOOVE a good u-pick. There’s something serene and relaxing about picking your own fruits and vegetables surrounded by nature. *sigh* This month, we’ve compiled our go-to list of the top u-pick places to check out in Parkland County & surrounding areas.

  • Big Rock Berry Farm:We discovered this local spot last year and let us say that we were wowed. Run by husband and wife duo, Tim and Amber Darragh, and their four young sons, Big Rock Berry Farm offers u-picking for strawberries, raspberries, rhubarb, cherries, and haskaps. The Darragh’s take pride in teaching their boys all about where food comes from, how it is grown, maintained, and cultivated, and how to enjoy it both fresh and as an ingredient in cooking. We just loved the family feel of this place when we first visited. Be sure to check out their “tips” section on their websitebefore making the trip!

  • Brix ‘N Berries:When we first discovered that Brix ‘N Berries was located outside of Leduc, we were a little bit reluctant to make the drive. The sprawling 60 acre property has a 50 acre Saskatoon orchard, 4 acres of strawberries, 1 acre of raspberries, haskap, sour cherries, apple and plum trees, and blueberries. This in itself, sold us on making the drive. They’ve got a ton of fruit and vegetable u-pick options throughout the summer and it’s safe to say there’s something for everyone here. The owners, Greg Moline and Laurie Erickson, have a strong background in agriculture and a distinct love of farming which is evident in how well kept their property is. Make sure to check out their websitefor specific info on what fruits and vegetables are ready for picking!

  • Grove Berry Patch:Grove Berry Patch is a local gem that has become known as the go-to farm for saskatoon picking in the tri-area. We have fond memories of picking saskatoons here year after year and coming home with stained purple hands. The 20 acre saskatoon orchard isn’t the only thing Grove Berry Patch offers. They’ve got a ton of other fruits and vegetables ready to be harvested throughout the summer months. Make it a point to stop in and check out Grove Berry Patch. You’ll love this family owned farm as much as we do!

And…. You didn’t think we’d write a U-Pick blog and not include one of our favourites, did you?!  Our honourable mention goes to…

Happy Acres U-Pick:Undoubtedly, Happy Acres is one of our favourites for so many reasons. They’re family-run, located just a few short minutes south of Spruce Grove.  They’re chemical-free.  They offer a variety of fruits and vegetables to pick throughout the growing season.  They host events & parties.  They have farm animals like chickens, turkeys, birds, donkeys, miniature horses, a miniature cow, a miniature pig, geese, lambs, goats, rabbits, and a talking Cockatoo!  And… they’re even set-up for kids with a playcenter, trampoline, tire swing, and more!  Did we mention they also have a garden center with farm fresh eggs, honey, preserves, and other treats?!  Ah… There’s so much we can say about this place – if you haven’t been, you really do owe it to yourself to check them out.
